Binny's Beverage Depot, a Chicago-area chain of liquor stores, is looking to into Wisconsin.
Binny’s CEO Michael Binstein says he’s seeking sites in other downstate Illinois markets and is preparing a push into neighboring Wisconsin. “We’re looking at moving into both Madison and Milwaukee,” Binstein told Shanken News Daily. “There are some exceptional opportunities in Wisconsin.” Binstein also disclosed clear ambitions to expand regionally and then nationally. “Once we set up the internal infrastructure to expand to Wisconsin, we can use that as a springboard to go national,” he said.
I've been to Binny's in suburban Chicago and they are quite the stores. A great selection of beer. While it all depends on the store and on distributors, I am hopeful that a Binny's here in Madison would have a decent German bier section, unlike basically every retailer in the city.
Interesting. Hey, do you know if there's anywhere to get a basic German Altbier hier? Or what locals might be brewing it or something similar?
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a typical German alt bier here in Madison. (i.e. - the stuff from Düsseldorf) However, Tyranena makes an alt - Headless Man - as does BluCreek.
ReplyDeleteThanks - I'll look for those.
ReplyDeleteThis is great news. I guess it all depends on the Wisconsin distributors, but hopefully it means they can further open our markets. If they can get even half the selection they have in their Lake Zurich location I'd be satisfied, plus it'll justify getting a Binny's frequent shopper card.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this!
Jesse - you're welcome. I've only been to the ones in the western suburbs. Hopefully they'll put Steve's selection to shame.
ReplyDeleteNichole: None of the locally-brewed alts are really comparable to the Dusseldorf originals. As for those, the Essen Haus once had Frankenheim on tap for a short time, and both Woodman's and Riley's have similarly briefly offered Diebels. I haven't seen either in any of these locations for many years, though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips, anon - yeah, looks doubtful I'll find something exact. Since the OP I have tried Tyranena Headless Man, which was close enough to what I was looking for.
