The folks at Filmwad have collected together some footage from Star Wars: A New Hope that was left out of the finished product. There are 3 sequences:
1) The first is an extended cantina scene where you get to see Han Solo mackin' on a hottie.
2) The second is of Luke running into a juice bar or whatever the hell it is and meeting up with Biggs and friends. He tells them of a battle happening up in the sky and offers his binoculars. I think this scene would have come in after we see the escape pod carrying R2 and 3PO heading towards the surface of Tatooine.
3) The last is a scene between Biggs and Luke in which Luke professes his desire to go to the Academy but feels obligated to stay on Tatooine to help his uncle, Owen. Biggs, in turn, reveals that he will be joining the Rebel Alliance.
The scenes aren't really necessary for understanding Luke and his motivations and they do cut down on the whiny factor, but they do explain Luke's reaction to Biggs' appearance at the end of the film. Check them out here.
