The 2023 census estimates for cities are out. The big news on a national level is that Detroit has gained population for the first time in decades. More locally we have:
It's sad to see Milwaukee losing around 16,000 people in just a few years. I wonder where they're going. Are people moving out to the suburbs? Or leaving the Milwaukee metro area?
Madison continues to gain people and we now have half the population of Milwaukee. Back in 1960 when the Cream City was at its peak of 741,000 or so, Madison had less than 100K.
I am a bit confused with the Madison estimate for 2023. These numbers say we gained 2,891 people between 1 July 2022 and 1 July 2023. Yet in October of 2022 the city of Madison annexed most of the Town of Madison, gaining just under 5,000 new residents. Would we really have lost 2,000+ people if not for the annexation? Or does the above number not include the 4,926 or so refugees from the town of Madison?
