Sexuality

I've been doing some reading about sexuality the past couple days and thought I'd throw some of it up here.

Firstly, there's this article detailing the wonderful stupidity inherent in some of our nation's abstinence-only sex education. The article notes:

A 43-day-old fetus is a "thinking person."

HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, can be spread via sweat and tears.

Condoms fail to prevent HIV transmission as often as 31 percent of the time in heterosexual intercourse.

One curriculum, called "Me, My World, My Future," teaches that women who have an abortion "are more prone to suicide" and that up to 10 percent of them become sterile. This contradicts the 2001 edition of a standard obstetrics textbook that says fertility is not affected by elective abortion.

What the fuck is up with this shit?! Instead, let's tell the boys, amongst other things, that frequent ejaculation may protect against cancer. I mean, there are kids out there asking questions like this:

"Somebody told me you can't get pregnant if you get raped, is that true?"
"since sperm can survive in a warm environment after a guy ejaculated inside me could i place ice on my stomach to until it go numb to kill the sperm?"

Abstinece-only education is absolutely retarded. By all means, say that abstinence is the only way to ensure you won't get pregnant or contract an STD but you can't honestly think that you can keep teens from having sex. Teenage boys (and some adult men) are basically comprised of testosterone. Billions of years of evolution are screaming at them to procreate. Combine this with insatiable curiosity and desire to rebel and you've got a whole lotta fucking. Didn't Rumsfeld say something about a free people not always doing the right thing. Take ignorace and add free teenagers into the mix and you can bet your sweet ass that there will be a lot of stupidty going on in the backs of cars. The Bush administration is so pragmatic about other things (such as the preparedness of the Army) yet they steadfastly refuse to be so regarding sexuality.

Here's an article about a study which lends support to the theory that sexual orientation is genetic or, at least, has a strong genetic component. "Thyroxine...and amphetamine-based diet pills appear to influence sexual orientation. Both were identified as being strongly linked to a higher rate of homesexuality among female offspring."

Finally, we have a piece about a shitbag named Gary Taylor who wants to ban the state of Alabama from using money to purchase media which in any way "promotes a homosexual lifestyle" or treats homosexuality as being "normal". And this jackass gets to meet with the Prez. When was the last time an atheist was able to meet with the President and give advice? An American atheist, that is, not a foreign dignitary.
