Rambutan: beware the big seed in the middle

After looking at the fruit section at a local Asian market recently and seeing all of these fruits I'd never heard of and/or tasted, I took the plunge with some rambutan.

They grow on tall trees and are native to Southeast Asia. I peeled one to reveal what looks like a large, skinless grape. So I bit in and hit the big seed in the middle. Oops.

De-seed first.

The texture and taste were a lot like green grapes. Sweet but slightly tart - less tart than grapes. They've got a taste that is kind of sprightly but tempered with something floral.

Very, very tasty!
