Pictures at Exhibitions

Tonight is the opening reception for the exhibitions by Wisconsin artists Kay Knight and Gina Litherland. Their works will be in the James Watrous Gallery at the Overture Center and among them will be some new works - "Paper Dolls & Cowgirls" and "Endangered Fictions". The reception is from 5-7 this evening with talks by the artists themselves beginning at 5:30.

Kay Knight is an associate professor of painting and drawing at UW-Milwaukee. Check out the Magpie Media page as it includes a video short called "Interiors & Entanglements" which looks at Knight's work.

The above picture interested me and I am happy to say that Gina Litherland has her own website. The above painting immediately attracted me because it looks like a Renaissance period piece. And it's a bit odd. The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters says that "Litherland’s detailed, narrative paintings draw more on Wisconsin’s surrealist heritage." I didn't even know Wisconsin had a surrealist heritage. Some of her works remind me of John Jude Palencar but without the Lovecraftian subject matter. Here's a couple more ditties by her:

The exhibitions run through 9 July.
