Thoughts at Compline

I will be TiVoing "Facing Life: The Retrial of Evan Zimmerman" tonight. It's a documentary on A&E about a murder case involving an Eau Claire man who was defending by UW law professors & students as well as the Wisconsin Innocence Project, which seeks to use DNA evidence to overturn wrongful convictions. The show starts shortly at 8 and will be repeated at midnight.

Tomorrow is 6 June 2006 and, if our local NBC affiliate is to be believed, Christians throughout the community are cowering in fear over having to traverse a date that also corresponds to the Number of the Beast. They had a blurb on a little while ago with highlights of the 10 o'clock news and a disembodied female voice reassured viewers that they at channel 15 have the straight dope on it and that there's no reason to fear.

OK. Are any Christians out there really scared because of tomorrow's date? If so, will the reassurances of a talking head on the TV calm your fears? First of all, the Number of the Beast seems to be 616. And June 1st went by just like May 31st. Are the faithful here in Madison really like Melissa Parker who is paranoid and fears that, because tomorrow is her due date, she'll be giving birth to the anti-Christ?

"I'm terrified the birth will go wrong or the child will have evil in him or her," Parker said. "Even worse my beautiful baby could be the devil himself -- the anti-Christ."

I wonder if her paranoia and fear could cause complications. And I've got news for her - of course there's evil in her child. Not necessarily Hitler evil, but we all have a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. Welcome to being human.
